The goal of the Berlin Portfolio Preparation Courses at Atelier Balzer is to work in a concentrated and elemental manner toward compiling a portfolio.
One year of preparation, at least, was what the professors of the University of the Arts were saying twenty five years ago when it was still the College of the Arts. This was true for Fine Arts, the course of study - at that time - with the most applicants. Between approximately 400 and 800 were applying for a total capacity of about 20. In the meantime, almost every other Art Course is just as sought after. Visual Communication, Communication Design, Graphic Design, Photo Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Interior Design, Architecture, Restoration, Fashion Design, Media Design, Art Studies - Liberal Arts, the Fine Arts, the Arts - Teacher Training. Therefore, an impossible task? Not at all. Many students from Atelier Balzer took far less than one year's time to prepare by exerting consistent effort, which means receiving regular intensive instruction with accompanying practice and work. There were hardly any participants, who still had not been accepted after a year of consistent effort. Photographic documentation of accepted portfolios from 25 years of portfolio preparation at Atelier Balzer are available for review. The rhythm of two days per week - Mondays and Thursdays - has proved to be successful, partly enhanced by individually selected workshops, drawing nudes and courses conducted at adult education centres by Christopher Balzer. Similar to students at a School of Art, on their 'days off', the participants in these courses reinforce, what they have learned, create new things, sketch ideas, which will then be discussed personally in small groups of about four to six at Atelier Balzer. Instruction regularly add to new knowledge, inspiration and motivation. Of course, you also learn how to discover a portfolio theme, how to develop a concept, how to approach academic tasks, how to compile your portfolio, how to draw, how to use diverse colour techniques, how to prepare for an exam, and much more. Supplies - all important drawing and painting supplies are available at the Atelier. You can work at easels, on tables, drawing boards, or walls in the rooms of your choice. You may choose to attend the portfolio courses three to six times (i.e. six to twelve hours) per week, according to your schedule. 'KOMPAKT', 'CRASH', 'PREMIUM', and 'COMFORT' have proved to be particularly advantageous portfolio courses in guaranteeing long-term, intensive support, counselling and personal development.
